The Semiahmoo were fishermen. They had nets that were called reef nets that they place in shallow water to catch salmon. They also gathered clams and oysters. Children learn how to use what their surroundings could provide from their parents.

The Semiahmoo are now located in British Columbia, Canada. At one time their territory extended to the northern part of Birch Bay. The Semiahmoo maintained a signal fire on high ground above what is now Birch Bay Village. When the Haida came down from the north to raid the area, the Semiahmoo would send up smoke to warn other natives of the Haida approach.
It is interesting to note that Captain Picket met his future wife, Morning Mist, on Semiahmoo Spit. Read more about the Srmiahmoos
