The Semiahmoos were at Birch Bay. They are known to be in what is now Birch Bay Village, Semiahmoo Spit, Blaine and Point Roberts. They would use reef nets to catch Salmon and they would dig for clams. When the 49 parallel was decided on the United States and Canada. The Semihoo tribe moved north to what now is Canada.
The Semiahmoos are now located in British Columbia, Canada. At one time their territory extended to the northern part of Birch Bay. The Semiahmoos maintained a signal fire on high ground above what is now Birch Bay Village. When the Haida came down from the north to raid the area, the Semiahmoos would send up smoke to warn other natives of the Haida approach.
It is interesting to note that Captain Picket met his future wife, Morning Mist, on Semiahmoo Spit. She was a Haida who was living at Semiahmoo Spit.
